Four Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon is one of the most sought-after unique bourbons on the market today. Its consistency and surreal flavor profile has earned it Whisky Magazine’s 2008 ‘Best Bourbon Whiskey No Age’ award, as well as, other noteworthy accolades from around the globe.
According to the company’s website:
Four Roses Single Barrel is, “A premium Single Barrel Bourbon with a taste that begs to be savored again and again. Its taste is complex, full bodied and surprisingly smooth with a delicate long finish that is unbelievably mellow. It contains hints of ripe plum and cherry tastes with fruity, spicy aromas including maple syrup and cocoa. Drink straight up or on the rocks.”
I wholeheartedly agree with the manufacturer on this one. This bourbon absolutely bedazzled the pants off me. It was extremely tasty and undeniably smooth, especially for a 100 proof, full-bodied bourbon.
I decided to venture out into my cigar cave a couple of nights ago to relax for a couple of hours after a grueling day at the office. The evening’s choice of booze was, of course, Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon, which I paired with a Jordan Alexander III Legend premium cigar. This combination was to die for. The sweet savory notes of fruit from the bourbon and the sweet citrus offerings from the cigar created a marriage made in heaven.
At first pour, the eye-catching deep amber hue was striking, a picture-perfect example of liquid gold. The nose was a medley of delectable aromas: fruit, spice, floral accents, cocoa, and maple syrup with just a hint of wood.
Before I fired up my JA3 cigar, I wanted to take a few sips of the bourbon before blending its body with the cigar. The palate on the bourbon was full, rich and satisfying. I tasted a sweet, enticing bourbon that was unbelievable. As noted above, I would have never guessed that I was drinking a 100 proof whiskey. It was so incredibly smooth, I almost downed the entire dram like a shot – a personal ‘NO NO’ for me. I love to ceremonially sip and savor every drop of a fine spirit harmoniously with gentle puffs of my cigar.
As the bourbon deposited itself at the bottom of my gullet, my palate was left with hints of ripe plum and cherries. It was robust and full-bodied yet mellow and tantalizing. The finish was incredibly smooth and delicately long lasting, enough to keep me thirsting for more.
I highly recommend this Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon. The flavor profile is unforgettable and the body is full and complex. Its affordability, constancy, and readily available inventory add to its allure. I drank this neat, my preferred choice with all scotch, bourbon and whiskey, but I do believe a drop or two of water or a couple of rocks may open up the flavors even more. Pairing this with a full-bodied, medium to full-strength cigar was absolutely delightful; however, this bourbon is equally as enjoyable without the cigar.
Bottoms up! Enjoy.
